Fletch and I went to bring in the New Year in 2014.
We were visiting friends who lived on St. John. They had a sailboat, and so we ended up sailing around to many of the US and British Virgin Islands, including Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.
Fletch and I were newly dating at the time, and he invited me down to visit friends who had a sailboat. We based out of St. John, and all sailed over to Jost Van Dyke for the Caribbean’s most epic New Year’s bash.
We flew to St. Thomas, via:
Denver (DEN) to Newark (EWR) (4h)
Newark (EWR) to Puerto Rico (SJU) (4h)
Puerto Rico (SJU) to St. Thomas (STT) (35m)
Once on St. Thomas, we ferried over to St. John. Daily ferries run almost hourly from Crown Bay or Red Hook on St. Thomas, to “The Creek” or Cruz Bay on St. John (20-30 minutes).
I was along for the ride on this one, so my recommendations are going to be brief bullet points. Also note that several of these are actually located in the British Virgin Islands, as hopping back and forth between islands is common.
→ Try a Painkiller, the local cocktail.
→ Bring in the New Year on Jost Van Dyke, where you will see a bay filled with every boat imaginable, from tiny dinghies, to multi-million-dollar mega-yachts.
→ Visit the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, so named because the only way to get there is by wading from the boat to the shore.
→ Have breakfast on St. John at Cruz Bay Landing. The bennies are to die for. I don’t know how they get their poached eggs so darn fluffy!
→ Be on the lookout for the return of Willy T’s, a legendary floating bar that was sadly closed temporarily due to destruction from Hurricane Irma.
→ Visit The Baths at Virgin Gorda for picture-perfect scenery.
→ Scuba Dive off of St. John to meet some of the friendliest turtles in the Caribbean!
→ Capital: Charlotte Amalie
→ Population: 104,901
→ Area: 134 square miles (346 square kilometers)
→ Currency: United States dollar
→ Time Zone: UTC -4 (Atlantic Standard Time)
